Frank Fukuda photograph and ephemera collection, ca. 1906-1927 [graphic]. ca. 1906-1927.

Consists of a scrapbook album (disassembled due to poor condition) and miscellaneous photographs documenting Frank Fukuda's involvement with Japanese baseball teams in Seattle, Wash., from about 1906 to 1927, including the Mikado, Nippon, and Cherry teams. The images also depict Japanese University baseball teams both in Japan and as visitors in Seattle, as well as Fukuda's involvement in the 1922 National Boy's Tournament in Japan. Includes photographs of Japanese theater performances at Seattle's Nippon Kan Theater, where the Asahi baseball teams performed Shibai to raise funds, and photos that document the University of Washington baseball team's tour of Japan in 1908.

Frank Tokichi Fukuda was born in Shimonoseki, Japan, in 1889 and immigrated to Seattle in 1906. In 1912 he joined the Asahi Club, a young men's social club for prominent Japanese in Seattle, and helped form the Asahi Club baseball team. From 1912 until 1927 Fukuda was a player, manager, and coach of several Seattle baseball teams. He later served as principal of the Japanese language schools in both Portland, Or., and Wapato, Wash., where he continued to coach and manage young Japanese teams. He...
